No birefringence in Einstein’s gravity

چکیده
Einstein’s theory predicts that, massive test particles with nonzero spin or angular momentum, in an external gravitation field, follow geodesics which depend upon the orientation of the spin-angular momentum [1]. It has been claimed [2] that such an effect also holds for photons i.e. photons with different helicities follow different geodesics in the gravitational field of a rotating body. If such an effect were to exist it would result in a polarisation dependent deflection of light passing in the vicinity of the sun [3] or a polarisation dependent time delay of pulsar signals [4]. We show here that contrary to earlier claims [2], in Einstein’s gravity there is no birefringence and photons follow null geodesics irrespective of polarisation. Thus if gravitational birefringence is ever observed experimentally it would be a signal of new physics beyond Einstein’s gravity [5].

Experimental Tests of Relativistic Gravity
The confrontation between Einstein’s gravitation theory and experimental results, notably binary pulsar data, is summarized and its significance discussed. Experiment and theory agree at the 10−3 level or better. All the basic structures of Einstein’s theory (coupling of gravity to matter; propagation and self-interaction of the gravitational field, including in strong-field conditions) have be...
متن کاملO-11: Zona Pellucida Birefringence and Meiotic Spindle Visualization of Human Oocytes Are Not Influenced by In Vitro Maturation Technology
Background: In vitro maturation (IVM) is a promising treatment option for certain infertile women. Nowadays, with the aid of the Polscope, it has become possible to evaluate zona pellucida (ZP) and spindle as parameters of oocyte quality. The goal was to investigate the relationship between the presence of the meiotic spindle and ZP birefringence with morphology of the in vivo and in vitro matu...
متن کاملGravity-induced birefringence within the framework of Poincare gauge theory
Gauge theories of gravity provide an elegant and promising extension of general relativity. In this paper we show that the Poincaré gauge theory exhibits gravity-induced birefringence under the assumption of a specific gauge invariant nonminimal coupling between torsion and Maxwell’s field. Furthermore we give for the first time an explicit expression for the induced phaseshift between two orth...
متن کاملA numeric solution for metric-affine gravity and Einstein’s gravitational theory with Proca matter
A special case of metric-affine gauge theory of gravity (MAG) is equivalent to general relativity with Proca matter as source. We study in detail a corresponding numeric solution of the Reissner-Nordström type. It is static, spherically symmetric, and of electric type. In particular, this solution has no horizon, so it has a naked singularity as its origin.
متن کاملA Gravitational shock wave generated by a beam of null matter in quadratic qravity
In the present work we approximate an ultrarelativistic jet by a homogeneous beam of null matter with finite width. Then, we study the influence of this beam over the spacetime metric in the framework of higher-derivative gravity. We find an exact shock wave solution of the quadratic gravity field equations and compare it with the solution to Einstein’s gravity. We show that the effect of highe...
